| Alaska 2003 (Anchorage) |
You will find some pictures of Anchorage further down this page. My hotel was within walking distance of several attractions. I could see the Ocean (inlet) in two directions, and a nice view of the mountains in a third direction.
I arrived at 9pm, so my first excursion into Anchorage was the next day. I could see the Inlet from my hotel room, and walked down to the shore, about 5 blocks, an easy walk, however I had not realized it was all downhill until I started back. I tried to capture an interesting bird I had not seen in the lower '48' but he was too fast for me. (sorry I did not get his name) There was great dining within easy walking distance and my hotel had an excellent restaurant, never mind the fact a hamburger and cup of coffee cost me over $12.00. (it was a very large hamburger) This should keep me on my diet!! My first morning in Anchorage I had poached eggs on salmon. I thought it was delicious though a little too salty. Later in the week I tried a seafood chowder across the street from my hotel that was excellent.
The Captain Cook hotel was also a short walk away, and I wanted to see the Jade staircase I had heard about. That picture is also posted below. (Placing your cursor on a picture will give you a brief explanation) Alaska is famous for Jade as well as Ivory, Gold, Oil, and Salmon. The staircase was as I had imagined. I could see the Jade, though a carpet covered the center of the staircase. Captain Cook is credited with the discovery of Alaska. More can be read about Captain Cook here
