| Alaska 2003 (2003 World Mountain Marathon Race) |
This was the 2003 World Mountain Marathon's first time in the United States. This particular race is in its 19th year with most of the races being run in Europe.
The ceremony started with the parade of nations which can be viewed below in the pictures. The different nations paraded to the start line and around part of the track they would be running on and ended at the stage for the obligatory speeches, all short! The five Alaskan Indian Nations led the parade and after the parade gave a demonstration of native dances during the remainder of the opening ceremonies which ended with an invitation to the audience to participate in a friendship dance. A few closest to the stage did do so.
The actual races were kicked off Saturday with the first children's jamboree. (the only race pictures this author managed). The youth jamboree was to encourage the children of Alaska to choose active, healthy lifestyles. The contestants were divided into 3 age groups and were cheered on by parents and spectators. This was not an international event but was a fun kick off for the international competition. More can be read about this event here
