My Diet Journey; 2002 update and Q&A

My Diet Journey!

(2002 update and questions)

Yearly update, 2002:

Another year and I am still hanging in here. I Don't feel deprived...well, most of the time I don't! My weigh in is 153 pounds. I'm not at my goal and I do feel frustrated at times, but I have done well to keep it off, I am considering this just another challange in life. I'm continuing to weigh once a week and measure once a month. I do wish I had measured for my diary when beginning this page but hindsight is 20/20. I was in size 22 pants and creeping up to size 24 at the time I started my diet. Today I am wearing size 12 and size 14 pants. It has been two years, without significant weight gain so I am pleased with myself. Several people I know have started diets, using the more expensive pills or buying special foods without the results I have had.

I would still say that attitude, and motivation (desire to succeed) are the two most important components of my diet. In other words, know your body, enjoy what you are doing, and DO NOT allow other people to have a negative impact on your task at hand. People can have the best of intentions about you, but they do not have your reason for doing what you are doing. Should you only be hearing negative things about your dieting, it will begin to effect how you are seeing it too, so tell them to chill!!!(or what works for some is to not tell anyone you are on a diet until you start seeing results).

I am re-inforced in my walking too. People I meet wave at me, say what a pretty dog I have, etc. Little things like this can be important for success. I have started riding my bike again. I was surprised in the beginning how much easier it is too ride now. This proves to me that my endurance is better since starting to walk. I bought the bike at the beginning of my diet and left that part out of my story, because my legs ached, and it seemed so hard to peddle, as well as my balance was not very good. I finally got the tires aired up..it was sitting in my garage for two years..and rode half a mile. Riding that far was easy, though my balance is not what it was 20 years ago. It may improve with practice. I had forgotten how much fun riding a bicycle could be.

Questions I am asked

Q:  What are your measurments now.
A:  (hmm do I know you?) Breast 37", waist 34", hips 41"

Q:  What is wrong with diet pills.
A:  Some are probably safe but like taking vitamins, you could be washing money right down the drain. Some though are not safe and it is not needed, that is One reason for this webpage. You can take control of your life, your diet without them. Some of the diet pills are nothing more than legalized speed. It will speed up your metabolism while you are taking them but they have side effects, such as fast heart rate, palpatations, difficulty sleeping, increased nervousness and anxiety. Some that block some elements from reaching your digestive track, such as fat blockers cause other problems. (a good rule of thumb-- if you can do this without spending the additional money and ingesting something that may be harmful for you, why do it?--you can do this!!)

Q:  What is a good diet for 24 hours.
A:  I do not like to give specifics because everyones lifestyle, likes and dislikes are so different. I will this one time though. :)Assuming you are just beginning and want to see a big difference right away: Breakfast; A large glass of Grapefruit juice or V8 Juice
coffee or tea with cream and/or suger
midmorning snack; water, Juice ...see above, medium apple, or carrot
Lunch; Campbells any soup, one small can (creamed with skim or 2%) No, I don't have stock in Campbells soup co.
coffee or tea with suger at least, cream in moderation if wanted.(suger in moderation dulls the appetite)
Dinner; One chicken breast fillet, or fish fillet (watch the tarter sauce)baked
fresh garden salad (low fat dressing)
rice or baked potato (no butter) sour cream or try plain yogurt.
frozen vegetables (no butter) seasoning well will make it taste just as good.
Large glass of water, coffee or tea with suger (cream optional)
Bedtime Snack; 1/2 cup cottage cheese or yogurt with fruit, small bowl of grapes, strawberries (no half and half..suger ok in moderation.)

Q:   I have COPD and if you know anything about this, you can't do anything without getting out of breathe. Everytime I start losing, I have to go back on Prednisone (which makes me gain)and I can't walk very far because I can't breathe. Can you lose weight if you can't exercise? My dr prescribed me an electric scooter to get around on. I am a 58 yr old woman 5'4" tall and 285 lbs. So you see I have alot to lose. Is is possible for me or am I just hoping for nothing? Thanks, Mary
A:  yes you can lose weight without exercise. For you if you can cut way down on fat you should lose weight. Increase water to 5-6 glasses a day as long as that is not medically contra-indicated. V8 juice is something I drink a lot of. It is no fat and a large glass about 100 calories. Keep a journal of what you are eating and the time of day and why you are eating. Eating because you are hungry? tired? bored? Snacking is the culprit that gets us most of the time, that and deserts...LOL.

Q:   Im a 15 yr old guy. i'm 6'3", 285 lbs. i dont really look fat, except around my thighs and butt, and my stomach. i find that i dont really get that hungry, but i eat things anyway. its like the hunger is in my mind. how do I shake this so i can lose a lot of weight?
A:   at 15 you are still growing. The body is pretty smart and tells you to eat to support the growth. You are not very overweight and probably could lose 30-40 pounds max. Just make sure when you eat you eat healthy. Try to stay away from fast foods...LOL...I know that is a toughy. Eating fresh fruit in place of deserts for instance. Walking and sports are a good way to keep your buttocks and thighs more muscular and not looking fat. Balance being on the computer or watching tv with some good, hard exercise. You really will feel more energetic.

That is it for my yearly update. Keep the email coming, and as always if you want your story, pictures or not posted here, let me know and I will be happy to do so.

Post Holiday update!1/7/03_I gained 4 pounds over the holidays. (i am pleased)The staff and Drs. where I work are very very good at bringing in snacks over the holidays and I did indulge more than usual. This is a new year, and yes, my new year's resolution is to re-lose that 4 pounds and go for another 10-15. I will do the liquid fast again for 2 days a week, and eat sensibly the other 5 days. I continue walking my dog 1-2 miles, 3-4 times a week. On really cold or hot days I do some exercises inside such as jumping rope and situps and the all important stretches. I hope you all had good holidays and are hanging in there with dieting and exercise!

(Continue sending in your success stories, failures too...we learn from them as well)(We all need encouragement)
